Men's A Team Reports 2003/2004

Sunday 17th August 2003

Winfarthing Fighting Cocks 1 Hethersett A 5

Desira Group, South Norfolk Sunday League. Division Two.

The opening game of the season saw Hethersett Athletic travel to Winfarthing. A clear sunny morning brought a strong wind blowing the length of the field and the ground was very hard  after the long spell of hot weather.

Hethersett took time to settle and adjust to the conditions with the ball bobbling about. After 15 minutes they found their rhythm with a break down the left wing, which saw Rob Pugh deliver a fine cross to Tim Allenden who put the ball past the keeper for a fine opening goal.

Hethersett had a second soon after when a defender put through his own goal direct from a corner by Rob Pugh. A lot of competitive play in midfield and good controlled passing allowed Tim Allenden to get his second of the game with a fine strike from outside of the.

Hethersett continued to apply pressure and were awarded a free kick, which was neatly put away by Danny Holman, with the help of a slight deflection. Hethersett found themselves four up and well in control of the game.

In the second half, Hethersett had the wind in their faces and continued to control the game.

Soon after the re-start they scored another goal with a fine header put away by Martin Mowser. The back four for Hethersett were in control with Barrie Baker, Danny Holman, Mick Douglas and Ben Frosdick all working well as a unit. Winfarthing never gave up and got a consolation goal late into injury time.

Senior club debuts were made by 15 year olds Tom Rainsford, Ben Frosdick and Chris Kerr. A fine disciplined opening performance from Hethersett and a good way to start the season.
